In the last 3 years, country saw an addition of 150 universities to the list of University Grants Commission. During the same period, more than 1,500 colleges were also set up across the country.
According to the information provided in parliament, most number of universities were set up in Gujarat during 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18. Gujarat has got 19 new universities!
The other states which established most universities were Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Rajasthan. Madhya Pradesh has got 16, Maharashtra 12, Karnataka 11 and Rajastan 10 new universities, in the last 3 years.
Among the 1,500 colleges a major part were established by state governments. Others were established by trusts, registered societies and private management, and are included under Section 2(f) and 12(B) of UGC Act, 1956.
